To perfectly maintain your artificial grass installation, a regular cleaning program is highly recommended to ensure the maximum life span of your lawn. The outdoor nature of the product means that you are almost always exposed to the elements, as a result there will be some periodic light maintenance work you should carry out to look after your lawn. Below is a list of aftercare advice for maintaining your artificial grass and ensuring you keep your installation looking fresh for many years to come.
- Regularly remove leaves and debris from the lawn using a stiff broom or leaf rake.
- Rinse the artificial grass with water occasionally to remove dust and dirt buildup.
- For sticky residues like sap or gum, use a mild detergent or a mixture of 50% vinegar and 50% water. Gently brush the affected area with a soft-bristled brush and rinse thoroughly.
- Artificial grass is stain resistant, which mak]es cleaning up spills and other accidents easy. Most spills can simply be rinsed away with water. If residue remains after hosing off the area you can use a mild, natural soap with warm water. The key to effectively removing spills is to respond quickly. Spills are easiest to remove when they are still in liquid form.
- In high-traffic areas, consider regularly brushing the artificial grass to prevent matting and keep the grass fibres upright. You must make sure you are always sweeping against the natural grain of the grass.
- If your artificial grass has infill material, like sand or rubber, periodically check the level and redistribute it if needed.
- Apply weed killer if required, this will not damage the artificial grass but avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or high-pressure washers as they can damage the artificial grass fibres.
- Avoid using BBQ’s or alike anywhere near the grass. The grass is flame retardant but embers from a fire or cigarette ends will singe the grass. This is very difficult to repair.
- Avoid placing mirrors or any reflective products on the walls/fences around your grass install. It has been known for the grass to be damaged because of the sun reflecting from mirrors directly on to the grass.
- If you are a pet owner, you will need to stay vigilant in order to keep your artificial grass looking and smelling fresh. Any solid waste will need to be scooped up followed by a quick hose down. If your pets urinate in certain spots we strongly advise a turf neutralizer together with a good hose down once a week. If you fail to keep on top of this your grass could start to smell over time.
Artificial grass is worthy investment and like all investments, it needs care and maintenance to keep it in optimal shape. Following simple directions for cleaning and removing stains, as well as making sure it is free from debris, rinsed regularly, and brushed often in high-traffic areas are important aspects of care and maintenance and will certainly pay off in protecting a beautiful garden with artificial grass.
