Our Guide to the most common problems with Cheap Artificial Grass Installs

Over the last few months we have been asked to repair or replace some existing Artificial Grass installs either done by the homeowner or by some unskilled installers. From doing the right research to making sure you have the best grass for your needs right through to you making sure your chosen installers actually know what they are doing, here is a guide to avoiding those costly errors. Most problems can easily be prevented simply by using a company like Consumer Grass.

THE WRONG TYPE OF GRASS

Unlike what many people think there are a lot of artificial grass varieties – each type is designed for a specific use and comes at an appropriate price. Try to understand the differences between the different types of Artificial Grass and the different densities and pile thickness – our Design Team will provide you with samples and explain the differences if you need them. Beware of so called cheap price – if it sounds cheap and too good to be true then it usually is; it will normally mean the installers are not installing your artificial grass properly with the correct drainage and preparation – it may look good at a start but within weeks you will be having issues.

INSTALLATION CHALLENGES

Firstly there should never be a discounted, standard or premium installation options, there is only one way to lay an Artificial grass lawn for your home and that is the right way. If you are using an installation company then ask them for photographs of their previous job and check out their customer reviews. Make sure they are allowing for a good and solid sub base of at least 100mm, this stops the grass sinking and other problems that go along with this. Check how they are fixing the grass at the edges and along joins. When artificial grass is not properly installed the grass lifts at the edges. Visually this will ruin the look of the lawn but more importantly these edges become trip risks.

WET WET WET

Drainage problems are some of the worst issues when it comes to installation. A poor draining lawn will collect water in all the wrong places and lead to puddles. If not sorted early you are looking at a future issue that will cost you a lot of money. Our Designer will talk to you about this when we quote and make recommendations – we have seen some of our competition simply skimming a wet clay lawn and putting down 20mm of granite dust down – it will save you money but will be a disaster for you long-term.
