When we put down our Artificial Grass, we do it in the knowledge that it will go down and last for over 10 years. We visit many properties who have used other companies and are asked to put right their install; inevitably the main problem is what the Artificial Grass has been laid on – normally poorly prepared base ground or cheap sub-base (if it has even been used).

For us, the first step is the site preparation, we remove the existing lawn using a specialist turf cutter or potentially a digger depending on the install.  We take approximately 80mm of ground away which is more than most. (we have come across many installs where only 20-30mm has been taken away leaving no room for an adequate sub-base). We then level the area and look to remove all weeds, roots and other organic material which is disposed of. We lay a geotextile weed membrane over the entire area which is to have the artificial grass installed and if required, spray the area with a weed killer.

We will install a retaining edge to hold the grass securely in place. We give customers two options, they can have plastic batons or treated wood. We then apply a MOT Type 1 sub-base which is raked level and thoroughly compacted to improve drainage. We then apply a further layer of ‘Grano’ dust which is also compacted – this will be level with the top of the retaining edge perimeter then “scratched” accordingly so that the surface is perfectly smoothe.

We then roll out our award-winning Artificial Grass. The rolls can be up to 5m wide and for larger installs we will join the grass using joining tape and special glue to bond the grass together to form a seamless join. The Artificial Grass is then cut to shape and affixed to the wooden edges of the retaining board.

Finally, we apply an Infill (though this is not needed on some heavyweight artificial grass options) in most cases a kiln dried sand, which fills any gaps in the rows of yarn stitches found on our artificial grass. This infill also helps to distribute weight across the grass to help secure the grass, but also adds to the drainage efficiency on your new lawn. The grass is then power brushed to get the pile standing to attention.

As you can see, the majority of the work is not in the laying of the grass, it is what lays beneath it, quite often it’s what you don’t see which makes the difference.
